McClatchy Strikes Out

The PG is reporting that following the 2007 campaign Kevin McClatchy will step down as CEO of the Pirates a, thus severing his ties to the day-to-day operations of the team.

It was the walk out that caused this!!!

If you believe that, you are as useless as Britney Spears. Speculation about his involvement past this season started this previous off season when he refused to comment on staying with the team past this season.

McClatchy did a few good things during his time running the Pirates organization, but unfortunately none of them had anything to do with the product on the field. His obvious legacy will be PNC Park and the 2006 All-Star game. Don't over look his efforts in getting greater revenue sharing in baseball. While its still not perfect, it was a step in the right direction.

The person most concerned about this news is David Littlefield, who was McClatchy's direct report. No news on who will replace McClatchy, but that person will be responsible for whether DL stays employed with the team. Loyalty will be gone and past performance will be the one fact that will remain in the new CEO's eyes. The only way to make his impending departure more obvious would be for McClatchy to take out a buildboard on the parkway that reads, "Sorry I took you with me, Dave, but I'll be there to comfort you when you are fired"
